Alex Box
Alex Box is one of the founders and the
Creative Director of Illamasqua. She
grew up in Grimsby and then relocated to London to study Fine Art at Chelsea
College of Art and Design. Alex’s job at
Illamasqua is to shape the products development and make sure they look great
on the shelf. She is an inspiration to
me because she founded one of the greatest make-up brands an artist could
want. Furthermore, none of their
products are tested on animals.
Alex has accomplished many things throughout her career,
including being awarded Doctor of Design at Southampton Solent in 2011. She has also worked with many high profile
celebrity clients including Lady Gaga, Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss.
I have chosen to focus on the top model’s make-up due to the
half and half of natural and colour. One
side of the make-up is bright and the other is plain. This is extremely reflective of my
personality. The more natural half of
the make-up reflects my sensible attitude towards life. I like to focus on my ambitions and think
about repercussions of my actions. I
also prefer to have natural make-up on a day-to-day basis and sometimes none at
all. I like my skin to breath and to
save my ideas up to practise on models.
There is a definite contrast between the bottom and top half
of the face which is very bright and eye catching. I feel this reflects my creative side in
fashion and make-up. Although Alex Box
has mainly worked with one block colour, there are elements of many others
blended, for example the bright purple on the eyelid. This would relate to me as I am not unique
and have different fun parts about me.
Christian Wood was the Hairstylist for this shoot. I think this hairstyle goes great with the
make-up as it is not wild and wacky. It
is also similar to the make-up in the way that it relates to me – simple but
different. Although it is mainly blonde,
the pink/red tints give it some warmth and life. It also ties in with the pink make-up which
overall completes the look.
I would wear this make-up to a Lady Gaga inspired fashion
show. I think the make-up is cool and
wild and would be perfect for this occasion.
I would team it with an appropriate outfit for this occasion, for
example an all in one PVC cat suit would look great because the plain black
simple design would divert all of the attention to my hair and make-up.
My second look I have chosen was
created for Vogue China in June 2010. I
love this look especially with the models expression – appearing very innocent.
I love the way Alex has stuck to
a pink colour theme throughout the make-up.
Sometimes I find a colour I’m happy with and stay with it, only
sometimes veering away from the main theme with some slight variations in
shade. This matches my personality as
well, as I often find a new interest and focus on it thoroughly sometimes to
the exclusion of everything else for a short while.
The make-up is very simple but
looks cute and doll like. I feel I am a
simple person and easy to understand – similar to the make-up where you can see
what products have been used.
The use of pink blusher enhances
the models cheekbones which reflects my preference to emphasis my strengths by
drawing people’s attention to them.
I can also relate to this model
because she is from an Oriental descent and I am also part Asian on my Mum’s
side with both Indian and Nepalese roots.
Alain Pichon created the hair for
this look and I think it’s perfect. It
is simple but elegant just like the make-up.
I like to keep my hair off my face especially whilst I’m working, therefore
this is a look I would definitely go for.
I also love the white ribbon, I feel this completes the look and breaks
up the contrast of the pale face and dark hair.
I would wear this look to a party
being held at the Japanese Embassy to celebrate Tokyo being awarded the 2020 Olympic
Games. I would see the event as
showcasing the best that Japan has to offer, including high fashion and perhaps
providing ideas for inclusion in the opening ceremony.
